Amsterdam

Well, I’m back after a slight summer hiatus. I have shot plenty over the summer and have a little bit coming up so there will be plenty of posts coming up but for now I just want to get back into the flow with a little Monochrome gallery from my recent (holiday) trip to Amsterdam.

My partner and I want for a 6 day break in the city, travelling by train direct from London (3 hours and strongly recommended). I travelled with only the GFX50R along with the 63mm and Laowa 17mm; it was meant to be a holiday after all.

The GFX was set up in Acros (Red Filter) film simulation, recording RAW & JPG on separate cards (meaning I could get back to colour shots for some stock images if I get so inclined).

After much thought I decided not to take my iPad either (Holiday!) so dropped a camera connection kit for my iPhone into the bag. The reason for this was I had forgot until the last-but-one day of the break that there was a firmware update (3.0) for the GFX50R to enable it to communicate with the new X-App. Sitting in a Cafe on this last-but-one day, I downloaded the firmware update to my iPhone, transferred it to a card and updated the camera. Once done, the communication and image transfer was seamless. That said, all of the images below were transferred by the card reader into Lightroom mobile as monochrome JPGs at their original size. (I was slightly impressed on how I could tweak a 50MP image on an iPhone with no issues or delay).

Here are a few images (the layout crops them – click to expand to full ratio) …

Overall I loved the city and not having my iPad to constantly distract me into work was a huge bonus; my (facebook-less) iPhone was plenty enough for the holiday. We all need to switch off sometimes – something I am not too good at!

What are you secrets / recommendations for holiday travel with a camera?

Until next time

J

  2. Love Amsterdam and these B & W images are super. I’m loving using a vintage lens but it’s not always ideal to have to manually focus …
