BAFTAs Pt2.

This time of year is always hectic, this year, having stayed in the UK, it feels even more so.

I posted a few days after the BAFTAs a video featuring all the images I filed over the weekend, promising a follow-up post on the background. Well now is the first moment I have had some time to sit down and write.

Over the past few years I have photographed the BAFTA arrivals with 3 cameras, allowing me to capture any “large” frocks with a wide whilst also having a camera for full/half lengths and finally a 3rd camera for tight headshots.

Working with the X-H2s and H2 and the flexibility that the 40MP sensor offers I decided that this year I would cut it to two. I was expecting that I would use the H2 with the 16-80 to cover the full & half lengths with the 150-400 for the tight headshots.

It was with a little surprise then (yes I know that sounds pretentious) that I was standing there at the start of the arrivals with the 90mm on the H2s, deciding against going really tight…. (I do love that 90 on the H2).

Even more surprising when you think that the longer end of the 16-80 on the H2 would cover the same image content…

What it would not render though is the same image feel, the colours and the depth of field of the 90 wide open would give just a whole different image…

Hopefully the comparisons between these two images, which are essentially the same but shot with either camera highlights the differences.

Here are a few more that highlight the different types of images recorded by the differing setups. It should be fairly obvious which setup was used in each case.

More on life with the X-H2 next post…

Until then, what do you think of the difference between the images in the two set-ups. Is it worth the effort? Maybe I should have stuck with the 150-400? Let me know!

  1. Lovely images Julie, thanks for sharing.

I think the 90mm was the right choice in this case. I’m a huge fan of Fuji primes, especially the 56mm on the X system and the 80mmf1.7 and 110mmf2 on GFX. The glass is incredible, and (I don’t care what anyone says) incredibly good value for what you are getting. Not cheap, but quality never is. I’ve been a Fuji user for 12 years, never regretted leaving Canon behind.
